Search used to mean ten blue links and a scroll bar. Today, a growing share of your customers never leave the answer box — they ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question and act on whatever brand gets mentioned in the response. If you are not visible there, you are invisible to an entire generation of buyers.
AI SEO (sometimes called Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO) is the discipline of making your brand the answer these engines give — not just a link they might show. It borrows heavily from traditional SEO, but the mechanics of "ranking" are fundamentally different.
How AI engines actually pick what to cite
Large language models don't crawl and rank pages the way Google does. Instead, most AI search products combine a retrieval step (find relevant, authoritative pages) with a generation step (summarise them into a direct answer). To be cited, your content has to win at both stages:
- Retrievable — clearly structured, fast, and indexed by the underlying search layer (often Bing or Google).
- Extractable — the answer is stated in plain language, close to the question, without requiring inference.
- Trustworthy — backed by author credentials, citations, and consistent entity signals across the web.
Five changes that move the needle
1. Answer the question in the first two sentences
AI engines reward content that states the answer immediately, then elaborates. Bury your thesis under three paragraphs of throat-clearing and you simply won't get extracted.
2. Structure content around entities, not just keywords
Keyword density stopped mattering years ago. What matters now is whether your page clearly defines who, what, and how — using consistent naming for your product, your team, and your claims across every page on your domain.
3. Ship original data
Generic advice gets paraphrased and discarded. A original statistic, a benchmark from your own client work, or a proprietary framework gets quoted — with attribution.
4. Get cited elsewhere
AI engines weight brand mentions across the web almost as heavily as backlinks. Digital PR, founder interviews, and being referenced in "best of" roundups all compound your AI visibility.
5. Keep technical SEO fundamentals sharp
None of this works if your site is slow, unindexed, or blocked by a stray robots.txt rule. AI search still depends on a crawlable, healthy website underneath it.
The brands winning in AI search aren't doing anything mystical — they're just the ones who answer the question fastest, back it with real data, and get talked about elsewhere.
How we measure AI visibility
Traditional rank trackers don't work for this. Instead, we run a monthly panel of real prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, log whether and how a client is mentioned, and track the trend over time — the same way we've tracked keyword rankings for the last twenty years.
